Where does The Atlantic Diet come from?
The Southern European Atlantic Diet is the everyday cooking of Galicia and northern Portugal — Atlantic fish and shellfish, potatoes, brassicas, chestnuts, whole-grain and maize breads, dairy and pork, mostly boiled, steamed or stewed. It differs from the Mediterranean pattern in two concrete ways: olive oil is not the dominant fat, and pork is genuinely part of the pattern rather than an exception. It is also the rare heritage diet to have been through a randomised trial rather than only observational cohorts.

Is there good evidence that The Atlantic Diet works?
Nidari rates the evidence behind The Atlantic Diet’s primary claims as moderate — that is the current weight of peer-reviewed research for those claims, and nothing more.
The GALIAT cluster randomised trial (250 families, 574 participants, Spain, 2014–15) found new metabolic syndrome in 2.7% of intervention participants against 7.3% of controls, reported in JAMA Network Open in 2024. Observationally, higher adherence has been linked to lower non-fatal myocardial infarction and lower all-cause mortality across European cohorts. But this is one trial, in one comarca, over six months, with a surrogate endpoint — and the same paper’s environmental claim was null.
How does Nidari adapt The Atlantic Diet?
Pork is central to the original pattern, so our halal version leans harder on the fish, potato, greens and chestnut half — which is where most of the trial benefit is thought to sit anyway.
