Where it comes from

Where does Slimming World come from?

Margaret Miles-Bramwell ran her first weight-loss group in a church hall in Alfreton, Derbyshire, in 1969, explicitly rejecting the hunger and public humiliation of the slimming clubs of the day. The eating plan designates a large list of filling, low-energy-density foods as “Free” and unlimited, adds daily “Healthy Extras” for calcium and fibre, and gives a small daily allowance for everything else. It runs on weekly paid group meetings led by consultants who are themselves former members.

The evidence

Is there good evidence that Slimming World works?

Mixed evidence

Nidari rates the evidence behind Slimming World’s primary claims as mixed — that is the current weight of peer-reviewed research for those claims, and nothing more.

The independent, publicly funded Lighten Up trial (BMJ 2011, 740 participants) found Slimming World produced 3.56 kg loss at 3 months, but at 12 months its 1.89 kg was not significantly better than minimal intervention. The company’s own very large service audits — peer-reviewed but authored by company staff — report around 4% loss over 12 weeks in 34,271 NHS-referred adults; real-world, but uncontrolled and subject to attrition.

Is Slimming World safe, and who should avoid it?

Safety & supervision

One of the safer commercial programmes: normal food, no meal replacements, no extreme calorie floor, fibre-rich core. The main cautions are the weekly public weigh-in and applause culture, which can entrench weight preoccupation and is a poor fit for anyone with disordered eating. Consultants are company-trained, not clinically qualified, so people with diabetes, kidney disease or on weight-affecting medication should keep their own clinician involved.

What does Slimming World cost? Group membership, typically under £6 a week on a course, plus a joining fee. No food purchase required.
Our approach

How does Nidari adapt Slimming World?

Heal the plate.

Its Free Food list is unusually kind to a desi kitchen — dal, chana, rice, potato and lean meat are all unlimited. The catch is that it is a UK group programme; the same principle works at home without the weekly weigh-in.
